Preparing for Arts and Sciences BASc
22 June 2012
Programme Director Carl Gombrich advises on how you should prepare for Arts and Sciences BASc and the central role played by the use of online resources in this preparation.
Some special points:
1. If you are intending to take Economics on the Societies Pathway, but do not have an A level or equivalent in Maths, please have a look at the Calculus section of the Khan Academy.
2. If you are intending to take Health and Environment as a minor - and to take some Biochemistry or Genetics options - please have a look at the Chemistry or Biochemistry sections of the Khan Academy.
3. If you are intending to take Sciences and Engineering as a minor but have not done any maths since GCSE, please look at the Algebra or Functions sections of the Khan Academy.
NOTE:
1. It is important not to stress yourself about this and not to try too much. We suggest 1-2 hours per day on this sort of preparatory work as part of more general reading and, of course, a well-earned holiday!
2. On the other hand, you should work through the problems given and not just view the lectures. The only way to really learn maths and science is to do it and so viewing fewer lectures but doing more problems is better than the other way round.
Further points:
If you are intending to take a humanities module - e.g. English Literature - please have a look at some of the free lecture series on iTunesU. There you will find serious academic lectures by some of the greatest academics in the world. If you can read some of the authors in conjunction with watching the lectures, that would deepen your learning.
