Biography

Dr Smyth is a Senior Lecturer in Construction and Project Management in the Bartlett School of Graduate Studies. He has worked in the built environment field for some thirty years, working in contracting, volume housebuilding and development, marketing architectural and design professional practices and in academia.  Dr Smyth has worked at the University of Bristol, Oxford Brookes University where he initiated the Centre for Construction Marketing, University of Reading, as well as University College London.  Consultancy has been carried out for trade bodies, including Constructing Excellence, the British Cement Association, Major Contractors and both Engineering and Architectural practices.

Research Summary

Dr Smyth is the Director of Postgraduate Research, covering PhD and MPhil programmes. As Director of Research for the Bartlett School of Construction and Project Management, he coordinates the Research Strategy, mentors and helps encourage research initiatives and bids.  As Director for Postgraduate Research he organises admissions, supervision and seminars for MPhil and PhD students.


His theoretical interests focus around aspects of core competencies and social capital in the management of project enterprises and at the interface with the industrial network and its clients.  Applied research focuses upon:


- Marketing and project business development,
- Relationship management, trust and confidence,
- Knowledge management,
- Organisational culture,
- Client and customer identification.

Dr Smyth supervised 2 doctorate students, one for 3 years who completed successfully. He is currently first supervisor for 2 PhD Students:


- Joan Gutes – Trust in FM Organisations
- Caroline Fabianski – Cultural Analysis of PPP/PFI Projects


He is second supervisor for 8 PhD students
