It’s a long way from Astana to Roxby Downs, but for University College London Masters of Science student Aishat Yergaliyeva it’s a visit she’s been looking forward to for almost a year.
Aishat is the first winner of a BHP Billiton-UCL MSc scholarship and she visited the Olympic Dam mine this week with 14 other MSc students from the UCL School of Energy and Resources, Australia, the university’s first overseas campus which was established in 2010.
UCL, one of the world’s top 10 universities, signed a US$10m agreement with BHP Billiton last year, to establish two institutes, a major international scholarship programme and research projects.
Aishat Yergaliyeva, 25, a chemical engineer from Kazakhstan, says she was attracted to apply for the BHP Billiton Scholarship programme at UCL because it offered unique multidisciplinary education covering topics such as economics, laws and geopolitics – a complement to her technical training.
“I realized to grow in my career that I needed to develop broader skills so that I can apply these in management and leadership roles,” Ms Yergaliyeva says.
“I am a very technical person, so I’m looking forward to learning these other disciplines, particularly critical assessment methods and policy development.
“I heard about UCL opening in Australia because I was studying my undergraduate chemical engineering degree at UCL in London so I’m excited to finally be in Australia and heading to Roxby Downs to see Olympic Dam.”
Ms Yergaliyeva graduated with honors from UCL in 2010 and completed Kazakh internships at Schlumberger in TCO FE-Process Engineering Energy Team in Atyrau. She hopes to forge a career in the petroleum industry.
Professor Eric Fraga, the Academic Director of the UCL School of Energy and Resources, Australia says the second round of the BHP Billiton Scholarships are now open and the university is looking for top candidates to undertake studies at either PhD or MSc level.

Consistently ranked in the world’s top 10 best universities, UCL established its first overseas campus in Adelaide in 2010. UCL (Australia) now includes the UCL School of Energy and Resources, Australia, the UCL International Energy Policy Institute and an office of the UCL Mullard Space Science Laboratory.
UCL was founded in 1826 and counts 21 Nobel Prize winners among past and present alumni.
