Santos Scholarships bring global talent to Adelaide

University College London has today launched up $600,000 worth of Santos Scholarships for 2014, during a student visit to the Santos’ Port Bonython hydrocarbon processing plant.
UCL Chief Executive David Travers announced the launch of the 2014 scholarship programme with Warren Kruger, Santos Port Bonython Plant Manager.
Mr Travers says the programme, now in its fourth year, has grown in stature, becoming one of the most prestigious energy scholarship programmes in the world, attracting more than a 1000 applications since 2010. The launch takes to 20 the number of Santos Scholarships awarded by UCL, bringing international petroleum and resources skills to Australia.
“We will again offer up to five full Santos Scholarships in 2014, each worth $114,500 over two years (comprising full tuition plus a $50,000 tax free stipend),” Mr Travers says.
The UCL tour of Port Bonython is part of a three-day Energy Technologies field trip and includes 27 MSc and PhD students visiting seven sites from Adelaide to Whyalla.
Among the group who visited Port Bonython today are the five winners of the 2013 Santos Scholarship programme who have recently commenced their studies in Adelaide. The current scholarship winners include:
- Matthew Armitage, Britain;
- Vincent Ashikordi, Nigeria;
- Christopher Bartley, Australia;
- Anna Budaghyan, Armenia; and
- Iwan Setiyono Ko, Indonesia.
Mr Bartley,
28, who prior to winning his Santos Scholarship, was a senior field engineer
with Schlumberger in Saudi Arabia, says he’s relishing the challenge of
returning to study in Australia and to gaining a dual UK-Australian
qualification from one of the world’s best universities.
“I had studied engineering (mechatronics) at the University of Queensland before starting my career and the Santos Scholarship allows me to study full time over the next two years. I was attracted to this particular degree because it combines the range of disciplines I will need to become a resources leader – such as laws, economics, finance – even the political economy,” he says.
“Studying at UCL will help me to improve my research skills, gain a top graduate qualification before advancing to the next stage of my career.”
The scholarships form part of a $3m Santos programme to help UCL develop resources and energy expertise. This financial support is in addition to Santos’ $10m commitment to help establish UCL’s Adelaide campus.
Santos and Australia’s oil and gas industry has already directly benefitted from this program, recently recruiting a Graduate Reservoir Engineer from Nigeria and a Graduate Civil Engineer from Bangladesh.
