The course aims to provide an historical and archaeological encounter with issues of slavery and African cultural survival in the New World. It will ensure that students;

  • have a detailed understanding of the history of slavery in Africa and the New World
  • are aware of the means by which archaeology contributes to our historical knowledge of the African diaspora
  • engage with the current social issues which impact the interpretation and portrayal of slavery at heritage sites
  • are encouraged to discuss long term research strategies for archaeologies of the diaspora.
