The course is introductory and does not assume previous knowledge of chemistry. Although the course has a significant scientific content, it will not assume a formal scientific background: it is intended to be comprehensible to non-scientists. The course aims to make the student familiar with those aspects of chemistry that are most applicable in the study of archaeological and cultural objects and in their conservation. It also aims to provide the student with some understanding of the chemistry of the natural resources used and modified by mankind in antiquity. The course will consider ways in which archaeological artefacts can be analysed chemically to yield information about the technology of their manufacture, their provenance and their date. Aspects of chemistry relevant to the conservation of that information content will also be considered.
