Staff undertake field research in many countries, while major thematic areas include urban origins and development, landscape archaeology, the built environment, maritime archaeology, material culture and the application of scientific methods to the study of the middle ages. Interdisciplinary methods and approaches are a particular strength and the Institute is home to a series of major research projects.
