Case studies

In addition to the systematic study of all archaeological evidence relating to Late Anglo-Saxon civil defences, the research project is carrying out the detailed analysis of four selected areas from which to interpret local military organisation:

  1. the North Wiltshire Wessex/Mercian frontier;
  2. the coastal zone of eastern Kent and Sussex, including the coastal burhs and the Cinque Ports;
  3. the Thames Valley frontier;
  4. and the parish of Yatesbury, in North Wiltshire.

Case Study Areas

It is hoped that comparisons between the regional studies will allow for major questions regarding the chronology, planning and development of these systems to be addressed.
