Ships and Shipping in Medieval Manuscripts

Medieval maritime iconography

Between 2007-9 Joe Flatman undertook research into depictions of ships in medieval illuminated manuscripts housed in the British Library, London. This resulted in a major publication in 2009, published by the British Library Press and University of Chicago Press.
Joe has continued to maintain his research interest in this field, most recently investigating funding possibilities for a project into maritime iconography in medieval religious institutions in South East England.
