History:In spite of Macalister/1945, 491, asserting that the stone was in the Edinburgh Museum, an opinion recanted in Macalister/1949, 202, the stone stands in its original position.

RCAHMS/1957, 110, argues that the stone was taken to Bowhill for examination, but returned to its original site in the middle of the nineteenth century.

RCAHMS/1957, 110, note 2, also states that a cast is held in the National Museum of Antiquities, although the bottom of this cast is `an imaginary reconstruction'.

Palaeography:Thomas/1992a, 3 `Somewhat irregular capitals - G as `sickle G', R with lower-right oblique as horizontal. S (lines 2, 6) and D (lines 3, 4, 5) are in Insular script (semi-uncials). Line 1 unusual PE ligature, and final-A assumed (now below ground). Line 2, -CO of LOCO small and superscript over LO...Line 4, clear dot or point before HIC'.

Macalister/1945, 493, `The engraver forgot the second P of perpetua, misled by the P, which he had just formed; he rectified his error in a make-shift manner, by adding a second loop to the crossed P. The Two Os in LOCO also confused him, so that he left out CO and had to insert it above the line'.
