History: | Nash-Williams/1950, 125, and Westwood/1879, 202, both cite the original find record which states that the stone was found during work on the railway line to Holyhead, it was found face-down 'in the most perfect of the graves', in a cemetery of forty graves under the farm Ty'n y bryn. The graves were in an area of 20 yards by 10 yards and were about 2 yards in length and cased in rough stone. Macalister/1945, 376--7: `found acting as the cover of a stonelined grave, one of a series discovered in making a road in the township called Dol tre Beddau in [Pentrefoelas] parish ... The inscribed stone was laid with the lettering downward: its use in the grave may have been secondary'. In 1879 Westwood records that it was at Lima House 1 and a half miles from Pentrefoelas in 1846. Nash-Williams/1950, 125 and Macalister/1945, 376, both place the stone in Pentrefoelas Hall. |

Orientation: | vertical down |
Position: | inc ; broad ; n/a ; undecorated The text runs in three lines down the stone. It takes up almost all of the space on the stone. There is a cramping of the last two lines of the inscription, and Macalister/1945, 377, saw this as evidence for the last line being added to the stone later. |
Incision: | pocked Nash-Williams/1950, 125: `lightly picked'. Macalister/1945, 377: `pocked on the face of the stone'. Westwood/1879, 202: `deeply incised'. |
Date: | 400 - 533 (Nash-Williams/1950) 500 - 549 (Jackson/1953) Jackson/1953, 566 n.2: `This inscription is dated fifth to early sixth century by Nash Williams ECMW p.125) but he did not note the half-uncial S, which can hardly be so early. He now writes (30th November 1950): "I agree. The S in line 3 is almost certainly half-uncial, which would bring the stone well into the sixth century".' |
Language: | Latin (rcaps) |
Ling. Notes: | none |
Palaeography: | This inscription is largely in capitals, it does however have a half-uncial 's' in EIVS, a horizontal-bar R in Brohomagli, and a half-uncial G in the same name. The M/A of Brohomagli is ligatured, as is the A/V or A/N, and the N/E of Caune/Canne. |
Legibility: | good The chipping which has taken place on the edges of the stone, has not affected the text, which is clear. Macalister/1945, 377, thought he could see some ogham strokes on the left hand edge of the stone. These have not been recognised as Oghams by others, for example Miller/1979, 9. |

Jackson/1953, 566: `The first clear instances of ch [for cc] are mid sixth century, no. 349 BROHO[-], evidently a Brit. *Brocco- name, with ch spelt H; and no. 401'. Preservation of g before l in -magl-, mid sixth century (Jackson/1953, 463).

Halhed/1908, 235 sees this name as linked to both Gwriat and vir-iatius.
Jackson/1953, 306: mid sixth century, `may equally well be read CANNE; n.1 `Williams, following the reading CAVNE, regards this as the forerunner of *cun, = MW cun 'lord' (Archaeologia Cambrensis 1949, 169); but ... this is impossible.'
