| History: | Okasha/1993, 201: `The stone was discovered in 1856 when the church was being rebuilt. Edmonds, quoting information from the Rector, the Rev. F. Hockin, stated that it `was one of the foundation stones of the late church near the south-eastern corner of the chancel'. In 1858 Edmonds said that it `now stands outside the wall of the `vestry', in the south-eastern corner of the church-yard'. This is presumably the stone's present position'. |

Thomas/1994, 286: `The... name, by the seventh century Clotual (approximately as /klothwal/), is from *Cluto-ualos, meaning something like `Worthy-of-Fame''.
Jackson/1953, 274 note 2, and 646, seems to argue for the name being Brittonic.
Thomas/1994, 286, does not think this is a name but a qualifier meaning something like `great-in-judgement'.
