Palaeography: | Thomas/1992, 4: `a single line of capitals, some grotesquely reversed'; 10 n.6: `I see no reason to call this a 6th-century `Class I' inscription; the separate-loop letter B is probably a much older aberration'. Collingwood/Wright/1965, 734: `sub-Roman...when letters were some-times reversed'. The initial `BED' is reversed, as is the `EDB' later in the inscription. The Bs have two non-joined bows, the Es have the ascender extending both above and below the other strokes, as does the first D, the A has a curved top with no cross bar, and the L has an oblique horizontal stroke. The Os are extended and slim, and the second D resembles an inverted half-uncial D. The S has two (semi)-vertical stokes joined by an angled stroke. |
