Discovery: | recognised, 1911 Kermode, P.M.C. |
History: | Kermode/1911--1912a [= Kermode/1994, Appendix B], 73--74, states that `the proprietor of the farm, Mrs E.C. Farrant has presented it to the Manx Museum and Ancient Monuments Trustees, by whom it is proposed to have it set up...in the shelter erected by them at Andreas Church'. Kermode also makes clear that this stone was found as part of the work on the archaeological survey of the Isle of Man. Now in the Manx Museum, Douglas (MM52). |
Geology: | Kermode/1911--1912a [=Kermode/1994, Appendix B], 73, does not state the type of rock, but he does state that the nearest it could have come from was six miles away. Macalister/1949, 191: 'slate'. |

Setting: | in display |
Location: | Manx Museum (Cat: MM52) Now in the Manx Museum, Douglas (MM52). Macalister/1949, 191, records that this stone came from the Keeil at Balwarraugh 'in the parish of Maughold'; it is not clear why. |
Form: | cross-slab Kermode/1911-1912a, 69: `a broken slab'. |
Condition: | frgmntry , good The stone is broken. There is no right-hand arm of the cross, and only a small section of the shaft. Kermode/1911--1912a [=Kermode/1994, Appendix B], 69, suggests it may have originally stood to five feet tall. |
Folklore: | none |
Crosses: | 1: latin; outline; straight; plain; round holl; angular; outer curv; inc; plain |
Decorations: | Kermode/1911--1912a [=Kermode/1994, Appendix B], 69--70, states, `The cross and the lower margin of the connecting ring are bordered by lines...an incised Celtic cross, with the limbs connected by a circular ring, and the whole surrounded by a rectangular panel'. The stone has a number of small equal-armed crosses associated with the inscriptions, and a number of small carved animals. Kermode goes on to argue that the stone might also exhibit the agnus dei symbol. |
