Okasha/1993, 328, records that the first known site of the stone was `by the side of an old road cutting off the angle made by the road from Dulverton to Withypoole crossing that from Tarr's Steps to Winsford'.
Excavations prior to the re-erection of the stone in 1937 revealed nothing of interest (Okasha/1993, 328).
