Cubbon/1982, 275, argues that Kirk Michael, and a number of other sites with concentrations of tenth- and eleventh-century crosses, was an important ecclesiastical centre which would later become a parish centre. He also argues that the cessation of the erection of cross-slabs may reflect a `rise in power of the Roman church organisation as against the traditions of the Celtic church'.
