Statistical Treatment and Exploration of Bulk Geochemical Data on Archaeological Ceramics

The Ceramic Technology Research Network will hold a one-day workshop on statistical analyses of archaeological ceramics at the Institute on 28 April.

This meeting will assess the utility of various statistical approaches to the classification and exploration of multivariate geochemical data on archaeological ceramics. It aims to establish a UCL Institute of Archaeology protocol for the processing and handling of geochemical data in archaeological ceramics research.

The meeting will cover all steps from the receipt of raw geochemical data to the definition of final compositional groups, including: assessment of data quality, selection of elements; descriptive statistics; normalisation and transformation; classification and pattern recognition; graphical representation; integration with other types of data.

Attention will also be given to different statistical software packages and the use of macros and scripts.

Participation by invitation only. Please contact Patrick Quinn.

The Ceramic Technology network aims to bring together Institute of Archaeology staff and early stage researchers interested in the study of ancient ceramic technology and to organise focused group activities that cross-cut the wide spectrum of archaeological ceramics research being undertaken at the Institute.
