Paolo Del Vesco (UCL Institute of Archaeology) will give a seminar organised by the Institute's History of Archaeology Research Network at the UCL Petrie Museum of Egyptian Archaeology on 1 May.
Dr Del Vesco's seminar is entitled 'A Year with Flinders Petrie: Petrie's Pocket Diaries in the Petrie Museum archives' and all are welcome.
Abstract
Flinders Petrie is noted for introducing scientific methods to archaeological practice and for his admirable publication record. Behind these works (and beyond the excavations) was a whole world of meetings, lectures, conversations and everyday activities.
In this paper, I will discuss how Petrie's pocket diaries - and the names, lists, and nuggets of detail they encompass - give us a window into this famous archaeologist's world. How do these change and complicate our picture of Flinders Petrie?
Due to limited seating at the Petrie Museum, please RSVP to Amara Thornton if you would like to attend.
