Civilisations and Cultures: the Mediterranean and beyond

24 June 2014

MuCEM (Museum of European and Mediterranean Civilisations) in Marseille

David Wengrow has been invited to give the keynote lecture at the newly created MuCEM (Museum of European and Mediterranean Civilisations) in Marseille this week.

David will deliver his keynote lecture entitled 'Civilisation before the state' to launch the international conference 'Civilisations and Cultures: the Mediterranean and beyond', organised in partnership with the Institut national d'histoire de l'art (INHA), International Council of Museums (ICOM), the international art history committee (CIHA) and the French history of art committee (CFHA).

The international conference will explore what defines and constitutes civilisations: the relationships they keep with each other, and the role of works of art and objects of civilisation(s) within this framework and in these exchanges.

The MuCEM focuses primarily on the cultures of the Mediterranean, from a comparative and multi-disciplinary perspective, in which Europe and other continents that border the Mediterranean will play a major role. It is the first actual relocation of a national museum from Paris to a large regional capital. Its collections, consisting of nearly one million works, objects and documents have been transported to Marseille in their entirety.
