In Search of (Most) Ancient Israel

Publication date: Dec 3, 2012 4:04:37 PM

Start: Dec 10, 2012 6:00:00 PM

Location: Archaeology Lecture Theatre G6, UCL Institute of Archaeology

Prof Gary Rendsburg

The Institute of Archaeology and Anglo-Israel Archaeological Society will host a lecture by Gary Rendsburg (Rutgers University) at the Institute on 10 December.

Prof Rendsburg's lecture is entitled 'In Search of (Most) Ancient Israel' and all are welcome.  Admission is free, no ticket is required.

The lecture will present the literary and archaeological evidence for earliest Israel. Biblical accounts concerning the slavery, exodus, wandering and settlement in Canaan are treated against the backdrop of ancient Egyptian and Near Eastern evidence, with an attempt to dovetail Israel’s own narrative with the data emerging from two centuries of archaeological exploration in the region. While not every element recorded in the biblical accounts may be substantiated, the lecture will hope to show that the overall picture demonstrates remarkable coherence between these different sources of data.
