The Institute is the largest and one of the most highly regarded centres for archaeology, cultural heritage and museum studies in Britain. The Institute’s degree programmes offer an unrivalled variety of course options, both theoretical and practical, covering a diverse array of archaeological topics, and wide-ranging fieldwork opportunities. New degree programmes being introduced in 2013-14 include the MA in Archaeology and Heritage of Asia, MA in Archaeology of the Middle East and the MA in Mediterranean Archaeology.

League tables

  • The Institute was ranked first for the third year in a row in the Guardian Newspaper's University Guide 2014 League Table (published in June 2013) of 34 institutions teaching archaeology in the UK with a top score of 100/100 based on factors including student satisfaction with course, teaching and feedback and staff-student ratio.
  • The Institute was placed third in the Complete University Guide's 2014 League Table of UK archaeology departments (published in June 2013), coming top for graduate prospects and employability.
  • The Institute was also placed third in the Times 2013 Good University Guide, recognised as 'the most authoritative assessment of its type and is used by university applicants, parents and even governments across the world'. The ranking takes into account student satisfaction rates, for which the Institute again received the highest score of all UK Archaeology departments, and also research assessment results, entry standards and graduate prospects.

National Student Survey

National Student Survey 100% satisfaction

A National Student Survey of all undergraduate finalists is carried out annually for the UK government. Students rate their institution on a five-point scale with an opportunity to give feedback on all aspects of university life including teaching, assessment and feedback, academic support, organisation and management, learning resources, personal development and overall satisfaction.

Students appear to be very happy with the teaching and academic support they receive at the Institute, a 100% score for student satisfaction being received again in 2011 (equal 1st out of 41 returns) with significantly higher scores than the average for Archaeology nationwide under every heading. The Institute was ranked joint 1st out of 42 returns in the 2010 survey, with 100% student satisfaction being received. Data from previous surveys are currently available on the Unistats website.

Provost’s Teaching Awards

The Provost’s Teaching Awards celebrate leadership in teaching and learning across UCL’s eight faculties and demonstrate its commitment to continuous innovation in the teaching it offers its students. Since their inception five years ago, Institute staff have been successful nearly every year. The following staff have been recognised for their outstanding contribution to excellence and innovation in teaching with the achievement of a Provost Teaching Award:
