Doctoral Training Centre (DTC): ESRC 1+3 Year Award

The Department of Anthropology is pleased to offer ONE fully funded ESRC (Economics and Social Science Research Council) scholarship covering the full costs of a degree programme in Anthropology leading to the award of MPhil/PhD. The award has ben made by the ESRC through the Doctoral Training Centre at UCL.
The funding will cover fees, standard maintenance and London Allowance. The award will be offered for 4 years (where the successful applicant has an undergraduate degree or will hold one by June 2013) or for 3 years (where the successful applicant has a Masters degree or will have been awarded one by September 2013). Proposed research should fall within the thematic remit and area covered by the ESRC.
Where the successful applicant already holds a UK Masters degree or its equivalent, a +3 grant (3 years funding) will be awarded.
Where the successful applicant is not the holder of a UK Masters degree (or equivalent), a “1 + 3” grant will be awarded and the applicant will initially be expected to register for the degree of MRes in Anthropology. During the first year (the “1” of the “1 + 3”), the applicant will pursue a course of study leading - where successful - to the award of an MRes, details of which can be found at: http://www.ucl.ac.uk/anthropology/studying/masters degrees/anthropology. Upon the successful completion of the MRes, students move onto the MPhil/PhD programme with the additional 3 years funding.
The successful applicant will normally have obtained a First Class undergraduate degree from a UK university (or its equivalent) or be predicted to obtain a First Class degree. Where a Masters degree has been taken, the successful candidate will also normally be in possession of a Distinction (or its non-UK equivalent) or be predicted to gain one.

ESRC (DTC) Pool Awards

Doctoral Training Centre (DTC): ESRC 3 year Award
The two strongest applications not to be automatically nominated for the above-mentioned DTC ESRC quota award will be put forward by the Department of Anthropology to compete for a pool award in open competition with other the departments involved in the ESRC Doctoral Training Centre at UCL. The Department has a good record of having secured at least one of these pool awards annually.
UCL Overseas Research Scholarships (ORS) Award

Exceptionally able overseas students normally holding the overseas equivalent of a UK First Class Honours Degree AND/OR a Masters degree with Distinction may apply for an UCL-funded Overseas Research Scholarship. This covers the difference between home/EU fees and the overseas fees rate. The Department of Anthropology is able to annually nominate two candidates for ORS and Graduate School awards (see below)

Applicants do not apply directly for ORS awards but are nominated by the Department. Nominated candidates will be asked to complete UCL Scholarship applications together with references (direct from referees) and these must be emailed to Chris Russel (christopher.russell@ucl.ac.uk) by 8th February 2013.
In order to be eligible for this award the applicant must have submitted their application for a place on the MPhil/PhD by 8th February 2013.
UCL Graduate Research Scholarships

The Graduate Research scholarship is available to ALL applicants. Applicants should normally not expect to be considered unless they hold the a UK First Class honours Degree AND/OR a Masters degree with Distinction OR their overseas equivalents.
