Ph.D Thesis Title: “Inside the American Dream: An Ethnography”
My current project explores various dimensions of suburban life in the Midwestern United States, with a focus on the material culture of home, domesticity and community. This work critically engages with prior scholarship in geography, anthropology, and cultural studies to shed new light on how understandings of class, gender, and national identity are reflected through the single-family home. Demonstrating the relationship between material culture and concepts of self and society, the thesis utilizes in-depth ethnographic data to link affect and emotion with policy, exposing shifting perceptions of what it means to be American in the context of 21st century change.
