UCL Anthropology REF 2014

18 December 2014

REF 2014

We are proud to report that we entered 100% of eligible research staff in the Research Excellence Framework. We improved upon our excellent performance in RAE 2008 - the majority of research outputs were ranked in the top 4* and 3* categories. Overall, we are now the highest ranked London anthropology department. We achieved the second highest percentage of 4* quality of any Department in the country.

Our inclusive and collaborative approach is reflected in the 100% Research Environment evaluation, evidence of the quality of the experience that graduate and undergraduate students can expect in this vibrant department. This important marker is testimony to our exciting research-oriented seminar culture, its exceptional broad vision of Anthropology, the remarkable level of external grant income, the career opportunities opened for graduates, and the esteem in which the Department's distinguished academics are held internationally.

80% of our impact studies met the top 4* or 3* criteria and documented the productive contribution that Anthropology makes as a critical and questioning practice to the globally diverse societies with which our researchers and teachers engage. Impact case studies described the beneficial impact that research in our department is making to sustainability in West and Central Africa, to wellbeing in Bhutan, and to the lives of socially marginalized Londoners through documentary film-making. We believe that Anthropology matters and our results confirm this!
