7th November one day workshop

This event will bring together academics and postgraduate research students from within the social, behavioural and historical sciences to examine the scope of cross and inter disciplinary discussions as these relate to understanding the diverse experience of and cultural or social engagement with the illness and disease of cancer. It will aim to generate new synergies between disciplinary perspectives examining the varied dimensions of 'cancer cultures' as they are constituted at the level of individual experience, family, community and within or across different national contexts.

The event extends the work of the Research Reading Group at UCL on Biosocialities, Health and Citizenship examining the social context and implications of novel developments in the medical sciences for health and identity from a comparative and transnational perspective. As well as including staff and postgraduate students from the Anthropology department who are examining the cultural and social context of cancer from a variety of perspectives, we are seeking contributions from researchers interested in examining any of the following themes;

  1. Cancer survivorship and recovery
  2. Fear of cancer; risk and uncertainty, prevention and predictive testing
  3. Cancer and Modernity; transnational perspectives on the globalization of 'cancer cultures'
  4. Cancer and Health Differentials; the role and meanings of gender, ethnicity and 'population' differences

Please send title and paper abstract by 20th September. Confirmed participants for the workshop will be notified by 30th September. Please note workshop is open to registered participants only
