UCL and its partner institutions have expertise across the full spectrum of research relevant to antimicrobial resistance.

To combat antimicrobial resistance, we need to develop new drugs and other treatments, and also make better use of existing antibiotics. Our research spans a range of themes related to antimicrobial resistance:

• Understanding the threat: Developing a better understanding of bacterial pathogens, antibiotic resistance and host responses to infection.
• Developing and testing therapies: Exploring the potential of existing and novel antimicrobial therapies.
• Developing diagnostics and supporting stewardship: Exploiting new technologies to detect pathogens and characterise antibiotic resistance.
• Tracking resistant organisms: Using genomic technologies to track transmission and pathogen evolution.
• Changing behaviour and environment: Promoting better use of antibiotics and more effective infection control.
