Professor Iwan Morgan's lecture

In a packed Gustave Tuck lecture theatre after Professor Iwan Morgan's Inaugural Lecture, Professor Stephen Conway (Head of the Department of History at UCL) announced that University College London has awarded the Commonwealth Fund Professorship in American History to Professor Iwan Morgan.

Iwan, a member of the BAAS executive committee in 2009-2012, is currently Professor of US Studies at the UCL Institute of the Americas and will continue to hold that post in conjunction with the Commonwealth Fund Professorship in the History Department.

He is the fourth holder of the chair following Hale Bellot, Harry Allen, and Maldwyn Allen Jones. The post, which was the first established chair in American history in the UK, has been vacant since the retirement of Maldwyn Allen Jones in 1987.  Its revival is therefore good news for US history and, more generally, for American Studies in the UK.
