While Sir Winston Churchill's right to the title of "Man of the Century" is rarely doubted, it is much less known that many of the attributes that gained him his reknown were already visible before his 21st birthday and were shown in the almost unresearched several weeks that he spent in Cuba in 1895.

This is the inaugural lecture in a new annual series, the Richard Neustadt Lecture on the American Presidency, hosted by the UCL Institute of the Americas and its American Presidency Centre. It commemorates the founding father of modern US presidential studies, Richard Neustadt, author of the seminal Presidential Power, published in 1960.
