UCL Alumni (Singapore) was established in 1993 by T.S. Sinnathuray (UCL Laws 1953) and several very enthusiastic UCL alumni. The group have recently held their 12th AGM and continue to grow from strength to strength. Recent Events:
New Year Party & AGM - Thursday 15th January 2009

Around 40 UCL alumni gathered at the Singapore Cricket Club for the New Year Party. There was a good mix of generations present and this led to a lot of lively discussion. Some new committee members were elected at the AGM and this was followed by a very enjoyable cocktail reception.

Alumni, Parent & Student Reception - Tuesday 8 July 2008

More than 50 UCL members of the UCL community attended a reception at the The Arts House, Singapore on 8 July 2008 hosted by Professor Malcolm Grant CBE, UCL President & Provost. Alumni had an opportunity to network with fellow local alumni, current students and parents of current students. Professor Grant also updated attendees on developments at UCL and UCL's vision for the future.

Welcome Back Event

UCL Alumni Singapore (UCLAS) held its first Welcome Back Event on Thursday 8 November at the 2am: Dessert Bar, Holland Village, Singapore. 20 alumni gathered to discuss UCL and to catch up with old friends. A great night was had by all those present.

UCL Alumni Singapore (UCLAS) was established in 1993 by T.S. Sinnathuray and several very enthusiastic UCL alumni. The objects of the Alumni Society are: -

  • To support, assist and promote the interests and welfare of UCL graduates in Singapore;
  • To provide guidance and assistance to students who intend to pursue a course of study or who are currently pursuing a course of study of not less than one academic year at UCL;
  • To give advice and assistance to new members of the Society;
  • To promote good relations and social interaction amongst members; and
  • To help, foster and support the objectives of UCL in London

March 2007 From SizeUK to SizeSINGAPORE? Would Singapore be interested in a national sizing survey?
UCL has pioneered the use of 3D body surface scanners for the Clothing industry. Professor Philip Treleaven (Pro-Provost for the Far East) was at the forefront of SizeUK which was the first national sizing survey in the world to use state-of-the-art 3D body scanners as the principal means of measurement capture. SizeUK has received massive national and international publicity and has revolutionised the UK clothing industry.

As part of UCL’s development of an international alumni network, a SizeSINGAPORE lecture was given by Professor Philip Treleaven followed by informal drinks.

March 2006 UCLAS Wine Tasting Event

UCLAS held a wine tasting evening open to all UCLAS members. They experienced a range of wines and learned how to match various varieties of wines with different foods.

February 2006 UCLAS Public Talk

As part of the series of UCLAS organised public talks, Ken Lou, graduate of Bartlett School of Architecture and Planning, University College London gave a short talk-cum-slide show entitled "39 Ways to design your House ", based on his recently published architectural monograph ' Re-Thinking Building Construction, an architectural design perspective'.

December 2005 Annual UCLAS Christmas Lunch

The annual UCLAS Christmas lunch was held at the Garden Hotel, Saturday 17 Dec. It was a good opportunity for UCL alumni to catch up with old friends and also to meet new 2005 UCLAS members.

August 2005 Pagoda Street Performance

A gala performance of Pagoda Street was held at the Esplanade theatre, Singapore on 6 August 2005. The musical was first staged in late 2004 in UCL’s Garage Theatre, where it brought a little slice of Singapore to London. Revolving around the life of a young landlord who struggles with evicting his tenants, it touches on typical Singaporean themes, such as the struggle between tradition and modernity, whilst exploring relationships and the struggle of young people to carve out their own place in society, through a series of poignant vignettes of Singaporean life.

UCL Alumni Singapore (UCLAS) supported the event by organising a UCL Alumni Buffet Reception on 6 August 2005, which brought together alumni from across Singapore. The reception was supported by UCL and hosted by UCL's Dean of Students, Professor John Foreman. The British Deputy High Commissioner, Mr David Campbell, was the guest of honour at the gala performance.

Commenting on the event, UCL Alumna Ms Grace Cheah said: “It was a memorable and enjoyable evening for those who attended, and an excellent opportunity to catch up with old friends and forge new friendships. This event has certainly brought a stronger presence of UCL in Singapore and also allowed for UCLAS to reach out to more UCL alumni.”
