Welcome Back Reception - Friday 6th November 2009
The "2009 UCL Alumni Korea Welcome Back Party” was held on Friday, 6 November at Urban Garden in Seoul. 33 alumni attended the party. Professor Seong-Kyu Ha (UCL Bartlett School), Vice-President of Chung Ang University, attended the party for the first time since he graduated from UCL.
One week ago before the party, some of the alumni including professor Youngook Kim of Sejong University (The Bartlett), professor Jeongmook Moon of Hongik University (The Bartlett) and Professor Hyunsong Chung of Korea National University of Education (UCL Phonetics) had a dinner with three UCL delegates, Professor C J Lim of The Bartlett, Ms Penny Zorbas of international office and Ms Anne Moore of UCL Language Centre who attended “The UK Education Fair” held between 31 October and 1 November at the Plaza Hotel in Seoul.
Welcome Back Reception, Friday 31st October 2008, GEKO Bar, Seoul
The Welcome Back Event for new 2008 alumni took place on 31st October at GEKO Bar in Seoul. A total of 35 alumni attended the event and enjoyed meeting each other. The alumni welcomed seven new graduates for this year. Ms Claire Underwood from the UCL international office joined the event and gave a speech updating alumni on UCL today and introduced the alumni mentoring programme at UCL. Many alumni showed their interest in the programme. The event was enjoyed by all attendees.
Spring Dinner, 21st March 2008, Seoul Sejong Hotel
The "UCL Alumni Association in Korea Spring Dinner" was held on Friday 21st March, 2008 in Eunhasu of the Seoul Sejong Hotel in downtown Seoul. About 45 alumni attended the dinner. The oldest alumnus in attendance graduated from UCL in 1965 and the youngest in 2006. Among them were Dr Hyun-Bok Lee (Graduate of UCL Phonetics; CBE; Emeritus Professor of Seoul National University), Dr Kyu-Tae Park (Graduate of UCL EE; Emeritus Professor of Yonsei University) and Hansa Mahn-Gunn Youe (Emeritus Professor of Sungkyunkwan University). In their speech, Dr Lee and Dr Park talked about the old times at UCL. Dr Lee prepared dozens of slides which showed old photos he took of himself and his old friends while he was at UCL Phonetics. Among them was the one of the late Daniel Jones (former Head of UCL Phonetics; inventor of the international phonetic alphabet) in his house just a few weeks before he passed away. It was a wonderful event. Many people continued their chat until the early hours after the dinner.
Past Activity
UCL Alumni Relations Visit
UCL Alumni Relations Manager Ilona Cains visited the region early in 2006, and organised an event on 15 February 2006 in Shi-Chung-Yuk, Seoul.
A large number of young alumni met Ilona for dinner and drinks to discuss UCL alumni activities in Asia, and there was a great deal of enthusiasm for the graduates to stay in touch with UCL and their UCL friends.
This was the first time many alumni had seen each other since their graduation from UCL, so many stories were exchanged until the early hours.
