Elena A. Kohn

Why did you choose to study Scandinavian Studies in general and at UCL in specific?

Due to family ties and connections. We wanted to stay around London so UCL was the only real option as it is internationally known for its excellence in providing the best education and is located in the heart of London.

What did you like most about your degree programme?

It allowed me to combine my passion which is the Norwegian language with a degree in Management that took care of the business side of my degree. It is important in the modern world to be able to have a well-rounded education. Following my graduation I was able to use my language and business skills to work for the Finance Department of Computer Associates as a Scandinavia Finance Representative.

What was it like being a student at the Scandinavian department?

The teachers are very understanding and helpful. You feel their constant support and there is not a single issue on which they would not allocate their time to discuss it with you. You are encouraged to think. It is not enough to have read the material. Your views is what matters. This approach teaches you to think and be able to find solutions to problems later in life.

How has your degree been of benefit to you since you took your degree?

As mentioned above I worked as a Scandinavia Finance Representative for Computer Associates (CA) where I got to use my language skills on a daily basis alongside my management/business skills.

Anything else you want to add about your experience at UCL or your career since leaving UCL?

Life is very interesting and ever unpredictable. While working for CA I got to liaise with their legal department and discovered the calling for law. I am currently a law student in the U.S. It is a graduate school and you can only pursue it once you have earned your original degree. It is amazing that my passion for Scandinavian Studies led me to law but it is the way it is. I am very grateful to my UCL professors who gave me invaluable skills and a great education.
