With the UCL Festival of the Arts running from 7 - 17 May, UCL News spoke to Professor Jonathan Wolff (UCL Philosophy), Dean of the Faculty of Arts & Humanities, about the festival, and the importance of celebrating the arts at the time when many courses at other institutions are under threat.

What sounds make up London’s global university? UCL Communications has announced the winners of its ‘Sounds of UCL’ competition, which invited staff and students to capture ambient audio clips that reflect the life of UCL.

UCL undergraduates are invited to a free, half day workshop by the UCL Centre for Digital Humanities on Wednesday 24 April 2013.

UCL guidelines on open access and a publishing guide are available to UCL researchers.

The RCUK Policy on Open Access introduces, with effect from 1 April 2013, new open access requirements for research papers funded by the Research Councils.

A new project between the Slade School of Fine Art and UCL Centre for Digital Humanities is exploring and mapping hidden gems from the Slade Archive. 

A unique collaboration between UCL Art Museum and performance artist Marcia Farqhuar will explore the UCL Flaxman Gallery and the stories connected with renowned neoclassicist John Flaxman.

Historians from UCL have produced the first freely accessible database of Britons involved in slave-ownership. The resource will help people explore their family, local and regional histories, and also help increase understanding about a national past which is often obscured. 

UCL Art Museum has been chosen by the BBC to help spearhead their project to highlight the UK’s collection of oil paintings and the stories behind them.

23 postdoctoral researchers from 14 different countries have been awarded Marie Curie Individual Fellowships. The awards will enable researchers to spend up to two years working with research teams across all schools at UCL.

The results of the UCL Research Frontiers contest have been announced, celebrating the fact that curiosity-driven discovery and analysis has been a feature of UCL from its foundation.

Dr Stephanie Bird (German Department) is currently in Beijing as a visiting lecturer at Peking University. On 25 October she also lectured at The Bookworm Beijing on ‘Representing Trauma and the Possibility of Comedy’ which provided a unique opportunity to consider the relationship between trauma and comedy in literature and film.

UCL Behaviour Change Month in November 2012 will comprise a series of cross-disciplinary talks, discussions and workshops, and lead up to a £10,000 research prize workshop in January 2013.

A group of students have discussed setting up a seminar for graduate students with an interest in literature, culture, translation or gender studies, art, language, or any related subject, regardless of department.

A new podcast series has been established at UCL’s School of European Languages, Culture and Society, organised by Professor Timothy Mathews and Dr Simon Cooke, Post Doctoral Fellow in English at Edinburgh University.

Students from undergraduate to PhD level have pooled their skills to publish two new books on Scandinavia.

UCL has been chosen by the Wolfson Foundation as one of a select group of UK universities to receive postgraduate student support in the humanities.

The total number of papers, reports and PhD dissertations downloaded from UCL Discovery, the university’s Open Access repository, surpassed 2,000,000 during September 2012.
