UCL Philosophy Receives Largest Ever Private Donation

19 May 2016

Stanley Victor Keeling

In March this year, the UCL Department of Philosophy received a bequest that will fund scholarships, conferences, and an annual distinguished lecture in ancient philosophy, in the name of S.V. Keeling.

This donation of over £2.5 million, from the will of an alumnus who wished to remain anonymous, adds to previous bequests during his lifetime, leaving a fund in the region of £3 million. S.V. Keeling was Lecturer then Reader in Philosophy at UCL early in the 20th Century, and Head of Department during the Second World War.

The incredibly generous gift, the largest in the history of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities at UCL, has enabled the establishment this year of the Keeling Centre for Ancient Philosophy in the UCL Department of Philosophy. The Keeling Centre is home to the annual S.V. Keeling Memorial Lecture, the Keeling Colloquia, a growing number of graduate research students, the Keeling Scholar in Residence, and honorary and visiting fellows.
