Joint Faculty Graduate Open Day

UCL European Institute and Institut Français launch new cooperation

2 August 2013

The UCL European Institute is launching a new cooperation with the Institut Français in London.

From the academic year 2013-14 onwards, we will jointly host one colloquium and two joint lectures per year in order to reinforce existing – or initiate new – research links between UCL academics and colleagues from French universities working in the arts, humanities, historical and social sciences, and on European matters broadly defined.

This year’s launch colloquium takes the theme of 'In Place(s) of Memory' and will take place over one and a half days on 23-24 October 2013. It will include:

  • A half-day study visit of participating French scholars to host UCL departments
  • A public panel discussion with reception in the evening
  • A full conference day with three panel sessions.

We invite proposals from UCL academics working in areas related to this year’s theme to offer a talk, and to nominate a colleague from a French university with whom they wish to strengthen research links and collaboration. Both the UCL colleague and the corresponding colleague from France are expected to present their work at one of the panel sessions on Day 2.

All expenses will be covered. Proposals are invited from staff working on a wide range of topics and methodologies related to the theme. Areas of interest could include (but are not restricted to):

  • The legal and diplomatic implications of recent European "memory laws"
  • The cultures and politics of heritage sites and conservation
  • Literary, autobiographical or audiovisual negotiations of memory
  • Contested histories of war, violence and resistance, among many others.

We particularly encourage constructively critical and theoretically informed discussions on remembrance cultures.

Deadline: 13 September 2013
