The Values of Archaeology

Archeological work is costly. Yet what is its value, or better, what are its values? Drawing on work on cultural heritage, this paper will present a cultural economic perspective on archeology. This perspective highlights the values involved, including cultural, historical, social and financial or economic values. The key question archeologists face is how to realize the relevant values. As to the realization of financial values, different strategies are available, each with advantages and disadvantages.

The paper aspires to stimulate archeologists to consider what the relevant values are, how best to realize them, and what consequences the chosen strategy to realize the financial values has.
