Introduction to Intellectual Property

Friday 6th July 2012

About the workshop

This course is a whirlwind tour of Intellectual Property, with a particular focus on patents.  You will learn about the requirements for patentability, including novelty and inventive step.  We will also touch on some of the exclusions to patentability and the limits of what can be protected.

Important concepts such as freedom to operate will be demystified and we will also discuss commercial exploitation of patents, including licensing and technology transfer.  In the second half of the workshop you will participate in a business game in which these principles are put into practice.  Participants will attempt to build a successful technology-based business based on an initial discovery.”

The afternoon will be lead by Peter Arrowsmith, a patent attorney and partner at Cleveland, a boutique firm of patent and trade mark attorneys in London.  Peter has a background in astrophysics and optics and works with a diverse range of global clients dealing with technologies that range from software to robotic arms.  As a patent attorney Peter helps his clients to secure patent protection and provides advice on patent validity and infringement.”
