U-Create challenge gives boost to creative entrepreneurs

The winner of UCL Advances’ creative enterprise competition U-CREATE has recently been crowned, and to celebrate the success of the project the team behind it has put together a new video giving a behind the scenes look at its success.
Showcasing how the four teams who reached the final developed their products which went on sale at markets across London, it comes on the back of the winner of the competition being announced, with No. 1’s Big Idea taking the first prize of £200 in cash per winning team member through their stall in Camden Market being the most successful over two days of selling earlier this month.
The company had a hit on their hands through selling their miracle berry tablets, which wowed market goers with their ability to turn sour tastes to sweet – building on their brief to come up with a product which would promote UCL’s Citrus Saturday initiative, aimed at boosting the concept of entrepreneurship among those in the early years of secondary school, which sees school pupils set up lemonade stands as a small business.
The other teams which have made it through to the final of the challenge, before which they had three weeks to design, commission and manufacture their products, included:
- Design Unchained, looking to promote Citrus Saturday through their range of tote bags, baby bibs and tea towels
- International Corner, with their range of ice-cube makers and lemon-squeezers
- Evolon, with their range of lemon-related memorabilia
“What we’re trying to do is bring together interdisciplinary teams of students, some who will be from creative backgrounds, others who may be from business backgrounds, to combine their skills to succeed,” says Gups Jagpal, Deputy Director of UCL advances, in the video. “We’re really pleased the Challenge has been so well received; it’s been really competitive among the teams and it’s been a fun, rewarding experience for them.”
