UCL Accommodation offers a range of room types, with halls conveniently located in central London and Stratford. Find the student accommodation that's right for you.

We provide a wide range of accommodation, to suit all budgets. To be considered for a place in UCL Accommodation, you must meet the eligibility criteria and apply before the deadline. Additional information about invoicing and how to pay your fees is available on the Fees, Guidance and Payments webpage.

Zones and Bands

For 2024-25 academic year UCL Accommodation has updated the pricing and grouped UCL Halls into Zones and Bands.  

Zones are based on the location of the hall 

  • Zone A - Within a 1.5 mile radius of the UCL Quad, Bloomsbury 
  • Zone B - Between 1.5-5 miles from the UCL Quad, Bloomsbury 
  • Zone C - Over 5 miles from the UCL Quad, Bloomsbury 

The majority of UCL Accommodation will fit within Zone A. 

Bands are based on the building condition 

  • Band 1 - Newest build or recently refurbished to a high standard 
  • Band 2 - Less recently refurbished or not all areas refurbished 
  • Band 3 – Halls yet to be refurbished 
  • Band 4 - Budget friendly rooms in Halls that have not been refurbished 

UCL Accommodation works to maintain low and affordable rents, with most of our Halls in Bands 3 and 4.  

* Please note that nominated Halls, Urbanest and Unite sit outside of this structure and are priced independently. 

This pricing system allows for students to easily budget and understand the quality of the accommodation and the distance from Bloomsbury campus when applying through the UCL Accommodation Portal. For students looking to maintain a low budget during their time with UCL, Band 4 will provide the most affordable pricing options available. 

UCL Accommodation considers property and rental pricing by private providers in the local area when setting rental prices. This pricing system has been created to help students better understand the price points of accommodation at UCL and how it relates to other providers in London. UCL Accommodation pricing is based on consideration of all of the above to keep weekly rents consistent and fair across Halls. 

Budget  

When you are applying, it is key that you understand your weekly budget. This budget needs to include your rent and travel costs. You will need to consider the cost to travel to campus. This will depend on your distance from campus, where your course is taught, and how often you will travel to campus. 

While the halls in Zone B and C will be cheaper than the halls in Zone A due to location, we would advise students to consider the impact that travel costs may have on your monthly budget.  

Map apps, like Google Maps and Citymapper, can help you get an idea of how much it would cost to travel from our Halls to your university buildings. You may also be eligible for an 18+ Student Oyster photocard. Transport for London has the most up to date pricing information about Caps and Travelcard prices on their website. Please keep in mind that you can take the bus, ride a bicycle or walk, as these options may be cheaper modes of transport. 

Hall Types

UCL Accommodation allocates students to different types of halls: 

  • Self-catered halls are where residents are responsible for cooking their meals. 
  • Catered halls provide breakfast and dinner, Monday-Friday and brunch on Saturday and Sunday. Outside of these times, there are tea kitchens that are available for residents to prepare their own meals. 
  • UCL Halls are managed and operated by UCL staff. 
  • Intercollegiate Halls are run by the University of London federation and provide housing for students from a mixture of London universities.
  • Nominated Halls are private halls owned and operated by the student accommodation providers Unite and Urbanest. Most students living in these halls are UCL students but there may be some students from other universities in separate flats.

Please note: If you are aged under 18, you will receive an accommodation offer for a single room at Ramsay Hall, Ian Baker House or James Lighthill only.

Room Types 


Within Halls there are a range of rooms available to students to suit every budget. You will be offered a room based on your preferences and budget, though be aware you are not guaranteed your preferences. 

The majority of rooms in UCL Accommodation have shared bathroom and kitchen facilities. A more expensive alternative to this, is to have an ensuite room or studio. 

  • In an ensuite room, you have a private bathroom but share the kitchen facilities. 
  • In studios, you have your own private bathroom and a small private kitchen in your room. 

In shared kitchens and bathrooms, the facilities correspond to the number of users. For example, a kitchen shared with 8 residents will have more fridge, cooking, and cupboard space than a kitchen shared by 3 people.

Single Rooms - for 1 person
  • Single (catered) - A room for one person, equipped with a single bed (catered)
  • Single (en-suite) - A single room with en-suite facilities including a private shower and toilet
  • Single (large en-suite studio) - A self-contained flat with one slightly larger room for living and sleeping, with a larger kitchen and bathroom
  • Single (large not en-suite) - A large room for one person, with a single bed and shared bathroom (catered
  • Single (small not en-suite) - A small single room with shared bathroom (catered)
  • Single (not en-suite) - A room with a single bed and shared bathroom (catered)
  • Single (small en-suite) - A small room for one person, with a single bed and private bathroom (catered)
  • Single (small studio) - A small single en-suite room with kitchenette area (self-catered)
  • Single (standard en-suite studio) - A self-contained flat with one room for living and sleeping, a small kitchen and a bathroom
  • Single (studio) - A single, en-suite room with kitchenette area (self-catered)
  • Single (large studio) - A double en-suite room (for single occupancy) with kitchenette area (self-catered)
  • Flat (single) - A one-bedroom flat with single bed, separate kitchen and small living area (self-catered)
  • Duplex single room en-suite -  A room which is spread on two floors connected by an internal staircase
Double Rooms - for 2 people/ couples
  • Double (en-suite) - A room for a couple, with one double bed and en-suite facilities including a private shower and toilet
  • Double (large with integrated kitchen) - A large double en-suite room (double occupancy) with kitchenette area (self-catered)
  • Double (large with separate kitchen) - A large double en-suite room (double occupancy) with separate kitchen (self-catered)
  • Double (open plan kitchen) - A double en-suite room (double occupancy) with kitchenette area (self-catered)
  • Double (separate kitchen) - A double en-suite room (double occupancy) with separate kitchen (self-catered)
  • Double (studio) - A double en-suite room (double occupancy) with kitchenette area (self-catered)
Twin Rooms - for 2 students

A twin room is shared by students of the same gender. A twin room is furnished with two single beds and furniture, such as a desk and wardrobe, for each student.

  • Twin (not en-suite) -  A room for two single people, with two single-sized beds
  • Twin (not en-suite) (catered) - A room for two single people, with two single-sized beds (catered)
Family Accommodation - for students with partners or dependents
  • Bungalow (two-bed) - Family accommodation with two bedrooms and a separate living room, plus full kitchen and a bathroom
  • Flat (one-bed) - Family accommodation with separate bedroom and living room, plus full kitchen and bathroom

Summer Accommodation for UCL Students

UCL has a range of accommodation available for students over the summer from Saturday, 22 June to Wednesday, 11 September 2024. You are eligible for this accommodation if you are a current student or have accepted an offer to study for a full-time programme starting in September. Learn more about Summer Accommodation for UCL students.

Construction Works

London is a global, vibrant city and development is inevitable. The scarcity and spiralling cost of property in the capital makes it impossible for UCL to re-house those who may be temporarily affected by building works in the area. For this reason, we are taking all steps to reduce the impact of all building works, but some noise and disruption to those living in UCL accommodation will at times, be inevitable.
