What is Pharmacology? Pharmacology (Gr. pharmakon, drug; logy, discourse, study) is the study of drugs - what they are, how they work and what
they do. It includes the study of the manner in which the function
of living tissues and organisms is modified by chemical substances
and the study of the effect of chemical agents on living processes.
Pharmacology is commonly subdivided into pharmacodynamics (the
biological effects of drugs) and pharmacokinetics (absorption,
distribution, metabolism and excretion), also expressed as, respectively,
the effects of drugs on the body and the effect of the body on
drugs. (from A Dictionary of Pharmacology and Clinical Drug
Evaluation, by Desmond Lawrence and John Carpenter). MORE...
Pharmacology should not be confused with Pharmacy, which is a
quite different area of study involving the scientific legal and
managerial aspects of dispensing medicines. It is important to
realise the difference between pharmacology and pharmacy because
these subjects lead to quite different careers.
Pharmacology at University College London is taught by the new research department of Neuroscience, Physiology and Pharmacology which was created in 2008 by combining the old Pharmacology Department with elements from Physiology, Anatomy and Biology. The old Department of Pharmacology at UCL was the first Pharmacology Department to be established in England in 1905 and was also the only Department in the UK to have been rated in the top category in all five UGC/HEFCE research assessment exercises to date, and was the top-ranked (5 star A) Department in the two exercises in 1996 and 2001.
We have a spinout precision engineering company, G23 Instruments, which produces high quality scientific equipment, primarily for the electrophysiologist. The company works closely with active research staff within the the department and its novel equipment and designs are thoroughly tested under rigorous research conditions and sold worldwide.
G23 Instruments was established as the first trading division of UCL Enterprises Limited in 1996.
