Current information about the collections comes in a variety of formats. Access to Manuscripts and Archives descriptions are through the UCL Archives database – while printed material is found on the Library's Explore service, though not all items. Since the Collections have been moved from the main Gower Street Campus, a large number of Explore records are being changed or newly created to reflect the new location. The following information will guide you to the most suitable sources for catalogue references.

Additional finding aids for manuscript collections, consist of handlists, card indexes, online catalogues or any combination of these. The availability of these is given on the UCL Archives database, or by clicking on the collection name in the Alphabetical directory of Special Collections. If in doubt, enquire from the Special Collections staff.

  1. For items which are on Explore, the Site information will say Special Collections or Stores. A good guide is the date of the work, as all items dated before 1850 fall into Special Collections, or if the classmark is pre-fixed by the letter R. If in doubt, ask the Library Enquiry Service.
  2. For items not on Explore, the alphabetical directory of Special Collections is a browsable directory of all the main collections by name. Please note that this is not a comprehensive list.

Data Protection Act (1998):
Archive collections which contain a significant amount of personal data about living individuals will not be available for research without the written permission of that individual. Individual files relating to former Staff and Students of UCL will be closed for research until 80 years after the person has left UCL, in line with the UCL Archive Policy.

Freedom of Information Act (2000):
The Archivist will respond to general enquiries about Archive Collections held at UCL, as required by the act. However, we are unable to undertake research on the specific topics and enquirers are advised to visit the Archive Search Room to undertake their own research. Un-catalogued Archive Collections are not available for research in line with the UCL Archive Policy.
