UCL is a partner in an EU-funded project called Network of European Economists
Online (NEEO). The project will address the lack of integration of
academic output amongst premier European economics institutions by
creating a powerful new research tool called Economists Online.
Economists Online will provide access to the recent research results of
800 leading economists from 20 prestigious academic
institutions. It will include journal articles, working papers, book
chapters, conference proceedings and primary datasets - all
cross-searchable and accessible from a central multilingual portal.
The Library's collection of economics books is located in the Main Library, 1st floor, south end.
Finding books: The Library has its own classification scheme for arranging books on the shelves. Typically, a book will have a classmark which begins with the name of the subject (corresponding to the section of the library in which the book can be found) followed by letters and numbers denoting its position on the shelves within that section; e.g.
ECONOMICS N 35 PEA for a book on environmental economics
ECONOMICS R 14 OSB for a book on game theory
However, material relating to Economics can also be found in several other parts of Library Services including:
HISTORY (Main Library, South, 2nd floor); includes an
extensive collection on economic and social history.
LAW (Main Library, Donaldson Room, adjacent to the Flaxman Gallery); includes material
on the European Union.
PUBLIC POLICY (Main Library, South, 2nd floor); includes
books on the formulation of all aspects of government policy, including economics.
TOWN PLANNING (Environmental Studies Library, 5th floor);
has substantial material on topics such as sociology, housing, and local authority
finance.
GEOGRAPHY (Science Library, 1st floor); is particularly
useful for additional material on development and environmental economics.
MANAGEMENT (Science Library, 2nd floor); contains some
textbooks on company finance and accounting.
Most economics journals are available online (see below). Recent printed copies are also available in the Main Library and older issues can be ordered for next-day delivery from the Store: http://www.ucl.ac.uk/library/store

Accessing electronic resources
Material in electronic form is available to registered members of UCL, often from off-site. To access material from a non-UCL computer you will need to use your UCL computing username and password. The first time you access electronic material from off-site you will also need to set a cookie which will identify you as a member of the UCL community. For information about this visit the information for electronic library resource users section of the Library Services website.
Electronic journals
Electronic journals are best accessed from the Library's web pages. Alphabetical and subject lists are available, with links.
A complete list of Economics electronic journals is available here.
Note on accessing The Economist and Financial Times online:
Both of these titles are available online but they are "hidden" in a Library database called Nexis UK (see below). To access them:
1. Go to the alphabetical list of databases; find and click on "Nexis UK ".
2. From the "Select sources" drop-down menu choose "UK Publications".
3. Scroll through the list that appears in the box below and tick next to either The Economist or Financial Times.
4. If you are looking for a specific article or issue, now use the "Search terms" boxes and/or the "Specify date" option to find it.
Databases
Library databases are indexes of articles (and other scholarly material) which can be searched for material relating to a given subject. In many cases databases include a link to the full text version of a reference (look out for the SFX icon).
Useful databases for Economics students and staff include:
- EconLit
- IBSS (International Bibliography of the Social Sciences)
- JSTOR
- Economic Research Network (ERN)
- Nexis UK (newspapers and other news sources; business information)
- Web of Science (includes the Social Sciences Citation Index)
All databases can be accessed from the Library's web pages.
Statistics
Two large sources of economics statistics are:
- SourceOECD
- Economic and Social Data Service (includes IMF datasets)
These are both available via the Library's web pages. Other useful websites are listed below.
MetaLib
MetaLib allows you to cross-search a range of economics resources, including the databases listed above.
eBooks
A small but growing number of eBooks are available. The most significant collection of ebooks for Economics is Oxford Scholarship Online which includes a large number of Oxford University Press titles. Individual eBooks appear in the library catalogue (with a link); alternatively, you can go directly to the OSO website and search there.
Additionally, the Library subscribes to electronic versions of Elsevier's Handbooks in Economics series (some of which appear on Economics reading lists). These are listed individually on the Library's catalogue or can be accessed here.
Finally, OECD country guides and other series are available through SourceOECD (see above).
Useful websites
National Statistics Online
EUROPA: gateway to a huge amount of EU information.
RePEc: large database of economics working papers, journal articles and software.
Wiwi: helpful information for students of economics.
Exam papers
Copies of past exam papers for many Economics courses are available online. Printed copies can be found in the Main Library Photocopying Room.

UCL members can make use of a number of other libraries.
Particularly good for Economics students and staff, and all within walking distance, are:
Senate House Library: all UCL members can join and borrow books.
LSE (British Library of Economic and Political Science): reference access only for undergraduates and taught postgraduates; borrowing for academic staff and research postgraduates.
British Library: UCL ID is sufficient to gain access.
Full information about using other libraries is available here.
