Wiley-Blackwell journals problem

All Blackwell journal content was migrated from the Blackwell Synergy website to Wiley Interscience over the weekend, but UCL Library Services, in common with other institutions, has found that some of our subscriptions are no longer accessible.

UCL Library Services is in contact with Wiley-Blackwell about restoring access to these titles as a matter of urgency but, in the meantime, if you encounter problems with any Wiley-Blackwell journals, please e-mail the details to ejournals@ucl.ac.uk.

We apologise for any inconvenience this causes.

Temporary alphabetical listings for access problems

Due to off-site access problems for a small number of users, an alternative temporary alphabetical list of electronic journals is available.

UCL Library Services is working to diagnose and solve this access problem, in partnership with UCL Information Systems. We apologise for the inconvenience to those users affected.

If you experience consistent problems accessing electronic journals from computers outside the UCL network, please try using the alternative list of links. Note that several journals are licensed for use only on-site or via our "proxy server". Since the problem appears to be related to the proxy server, such journals are not available through the alternative list. These are marked "not available off-site".

Move towards e-only delivery of journals in STM

A major objective of The Library Strategy 2005-10 is the move towards electronic-only delivery of journals in Science, Technology and Medicine (STM). As agreed at the UCL Library Committee in May, the extension of e-only delivery in STM is to be phased in over a minimum of four years. This will allow us to monitor progress, including taking into account feedback from Library users, to ensure that the transition is as smooth as possible. The focus in the first year will be on titles in engineering and physical sciences, with relatively few titles that are core to clinical medicine.

From January 2007, around 500 titles will no longer be available in print. The majority are Elsevier STM titles (print will be retained for other subject areas), along with the collections of:

  • American Institute of Physics (11 titles)
  • Association of Computing Machinery (29 titles)
  • Institute of Physics (16 titles)
  • Royal Society of Chemistry (20 titles)

Walk-in facilities are currently being enhanced to help meet any increase in demand from Library users, including NHS staff and society members, who do not have UCL computing accounts which are authorised to pass through the UCL e-resource gateway.

Please address any comments in the first instance to ejournals@ucl.ac.uk. If you would like to discuss this further, please contact Diana Mercer, Group Manager, Bibliographic Services (d.mercer@ucl.ac.uk).

Use of Google's Web Accelerator may prevent off-site access to UCL e-journals

It has been brought to our attention that installing Google's Web Accelerator tool on your computer may cause your access to UCL e-journals to be blocked. This is because the rate at which the tool "pre-fetches" content causes concern with some publishers relating to excessive and systematic downloading of their content, something which is forbidden in the licences that UCL signs with publishers. The result is that publishers may block the IP address of the tool, which means it can no longer access the publisher's content. If you are using the Web Accelerator, you transmit the IP address of the tool, even if you have logged in using Athens, and therefore your access to content may be blocked.
