MacArthur Communicative Development Inventory is a checklist that contains words and gestures used and understood by children aged 8-36 months.

See http://www.sci.sdsu.edu/cdi/cdiwelcome.htm
Versions have been developed for many different languages, e.g. French, Catalan, and Russian.

There is an American Sign Language version (Reilly & Anderson, 2002) which is proving a useful resource for parents of deaf children who use ASL. It allows the parents themselves make their own checks as to how well their child is developing language skills.

City University London and University College London are now creating a BSL version of the CDI. We are asking at least 50 families who use BSL at home with their young children to help us discover what the natural developmental stages. For the year 2005-06, the items in the list have been based on the ASL version. However at the end of the first year, based on our analyses, we will amend the CDI specifically for BSL. The parents who are helping us have a copy of the current CDI and can use this section to assist them to complete the checklist. BSL video clips of each item can be seen by clicking the hand icons next to the words, e.g. apple. |
The MacArthur-Bates CDI Project is part of the “Positive support in the lives of deaf children and their families” project.
This project is a collaboration between the University of Manchester and University College London, in partnership with Deafness Research UK (the Hearing Research Trust) and the National Deaf Children's Society. The project is funded by the National Lottery through the Big Lottery Fund.
