Bentham Project

ed. M.J. Smith and W.H. Burston (Clarendon Press, Oxford, 1983), pp. xxix, 451.

First fully published in 1817, this work set out a secondary school curriculum influenced by Bentham's linguistic theory and his construction of a tree of knowledge. His materialist theory of language had important psychological implications, for it determined that children should learn by direct sense-perception rather than through words which merely symbolized reality.
