About the Authors:
Brian E. Cox is an independent researcher who worked as a Social Services Inspector with the Department of Health where he carried out research into guardianship. Since retirement he has continued researching across a broader front looking, for instance, at the role of guardians in combating elder abuse. He would like to acknowledge the helpful assistance received from Michael Quinn of the Bentham Project in commenting on early drafts of his paper.
Philip Schofield is Professor of the History of Political and Legal Thought at UCL, and Director of the Bentham Project. He is also General Editor of the new edition of The Collected Works of Jeremy Bentham.
Dr David Stack is a Senior Lecturer in History at the University of Reading. His most recent book is Queen Victoria's Skull (Continuum, 2008) and he currently holds an ESRC Mid-Career Fellowship for a project entitled 'Botany and birth control: elements of social science'.
