MA/Diploma/Certificate in Archives & Records Management

The MA/Graduate Diploma in Archives & Records Management gives graduates the foundation for a career in archives and records management in a wide range of organizations, such as local government, central government, businesses of all kinds and special repositories including universities. The programme is designed as a broad-based professional qualification. The MA and Graduate Diploma are the professional qualifications for archivists and records managers, are recognised by the Society of Archivists and are approved programmes for those seeking professional registration.

Students are normally registered for the MA. The Graduate Diploma is available for candidates who do not meet the entrance requirements of the University of London for Masters degrees or who are unable to fund themselves for twelve months study.

A one-term certificate programme provides students with an opportunity to study certain aspects of the curriculum (e.g. records management) but is not a recognised professional qualification.

Module details are also available on the web.

Related Programmes

Overseas students wishing to study archives and records management may apply for the MA/Diploma/Certificate in Records & Archives Management (International), for which funding may be available from the British Council or other donor agencies.

Entry Requirements

In addition to the general requirements, most successful candidates have a year's practical experience in an archive or records management service before beginning the programme; this may be on a paid or voluntary basis. All applicants must have a minimum of one month's experience. A knowledge of Latin to 'A' level standard (although not necessarily a formal 'A' level certificate) is required for students taking module in medieval palaeography and diplomatic. All students need a basic understanding of medieval Latin: some applicants acquire this by self-tution or a summer school or evening class before the beginning of the programme. All students need some familiarity with computers: IT skills are essential for archivists and records managers.
